Knee Pain

What is the anatomy of the knee?

Your knees are the largest joints in your body, which is appropriate considering the enormous burden they’re under, helping you make your way through the world. Each of your knees contains three bones:

  • Femur, or thighbone
  • Tibia, or shinbone
  • Patella, or kneecap

But the bones are only part of the picture. Keeping it all together and providing support, range of motion, and cushioning are the key soft tissue players, including your:

  • Ligaments
  • Muscles
  • Menisci
  • Tendons
  • Cartilage

More often than not, it’s these soft tissue components that are at the heart of knee pain.

What are the most common causes of knee pain?

Considering all that your knees are responsible for in terms of mobility, shock absorption, and support, knee pain is fairly common and can come on the heels of any number of problems, including:

  • Torn ligaments
  • Arthritis
  • Dislocation
  • Fractures
  • Meniscal tears
  • Tendon tears

These conditions can arise suddenly or develop as a result of degenerative wear-and-tear.

When should I see a doctor for knee pain?

If you’ve injured your knee, and you don’t notice any obvious fractures and your pain is tolerable, you should immediately apply the RICE method: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation. If, after 24 hours of this, your pain is worse and you’re having problems putting weight on your knee, it may be time for expert help.

You know your body best, but if your knee is painful and stiff and compromising your mobility, it’s always best to seek the expert guidance of an orthopedic specialist like Dr. Cherukupally at Regenerative Sport, Spine and Spa.

How can knee pain be treated?

The goal at Regenerative Sport, Spine and Spa is to help you avoid invasive surgical procedures. To do this, Dr. Cherukupally prefers a more holistic and natural approach that helps you heal from the inside out, often using the human body’s own amazing resources.

To address your pain and inflammation, Dr. Cherukupally turns to corticosteroid injections, which help bring immediate relief. Once you’re comfortable, she then turns to stem cell therapy to help rebuild your damaged tissue on a cellular level. Using stem cells derived from amniotic tissue or your bone marrow, she provides your damaged knee with the resources it needs to rebuild.

Dr. Cherukupally may also use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to provide an additional healing boost.
